Last year we performed Schubert’s Winterreise for Leeds International Concert Season and were so conscious of restrictions around the world and the devastating, lonely nature of that particular musical journey. Looking forward this year with more optimism we both very much wanted to include Songs of Travel by Vaughan Williams in this new journey and acknowledge his 150th anniversary while doing so. The text is by the great author, Robert Louis Stevenson; what a truly remarkable adventurer he was! Inspired by his love of travel, we decided to create a programme of songs from just some of the countries he visited. In turn, we also wanted to acknowledge his Scottish heritage and incorporate elements of traditional folk tunes. We’re particularly delighted to be performing a new commission by Cheryl Frances-Hoad with text by Leeds based Adam Strickson.
Through these songs, we would like to celebrate all those making journeys back out into the world, whether they be near or far. That journey starts tonight.
This concert will finish at approximately 9.30pm and have an interval.
