Pre-concert talk at 6.45pm.
We’re delighted to open the concert with the world premiere of Jonathan Briggs’ fanfare for strings Monkish. Jonathan is a Bradford born composer who is a participant in Britten Sinfonia’s OPUS developmental programme for composers.
Shostakovich’s concerto is full of the composer’s characteristic humour and wit, as well numerous quotes and parodies of other musical works, both his own and other composers. Many of Prokofiev’s whimsical, effervescent, and Impressionistic miniatures were written for specific friends. In this concert we hear a selection of Prokofiev’s original twenty movements; some for the original solo piano alternating with movements orchestrated by Rudolf Barshai. The series of chamber orchestra concerts ends in fine Russian Style with Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings.
