Here reside the last living ferns of Mirchwood, an ancient mythical forest driven to extinction purely by being forgotten. As its stories stopped being told, its trees vanished one by one. Now all that remains is protected in an enchanted terrarium, a living shrine to the primordial wisdom of plant life.

Leeds-based multidisciplinary artist Rhian Cooke presents Wow Now, commissioned by Yorkshire Contemporary. The video work is shown on a portable advertising screen, which references imagery she often returns to: vehicles such as bikes and cars, and lights in urban environments. Inspired by the swans in Roundhay Park, Wow Now explores tranquil and turbulent energy found in natural and mental landscapes.

The entrance to Headrow House houses a digital exhibition of their iconic rooftop neon signs from the last decade. It features song lyrics from the likes of Talking Heads, Whitney Houston, The Streets and more. Additionally, on Thursday only, you are invited to relax in Solas, an audio-visual listening space inspired by the Irish word for light, brightness and illumination. With live visuals and ambient DJs, Solas is an enchanting place to leave your worries behind and immerse yourself in a sanctuary of music and light.

The movements of people from Leeds are projected on a monumental scale in an immersive, deeply moving video installation. These will become part of the Motus Mori (extinct movement) archive, numbering over 2,000 people and celebrating all physical abilities. We are invited to stand face to face with the holograms and hear the stories behind their personal gestures.
Co-presented by Light Night Leeds, Transform and Yorkshire Dance and supported in Leeds by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the UK. Also supported by Fonds Podiumkunsten, Gemeente Tilburg and Provincie Noord Brabant . Co-produced by Media Art Festival and SPRING.

Reading from original letters by volunteer fire watchers during the Second World War, volunteer readers bring to life their crucial role during the Leeds Blitz. These historic letters are held in the collection of The Leeds Library and will be read aloud in the atmospheric spaces of the UK’s oldest surviving subscription library.

Women of Bangladeshi heritage from Shantona Women’s Centre, Harehills, Leeds have contributed to Stitching Light, exploring their migration stories to the UK. Along with Bangladeshi women from Bradford, Middlesbrough, Salford, Tower Hamlets, London and Worcester, their rarely told stories take centre stage. Onto traditional folk style paintings, participants stitched light reactive thread onto large fabric panels depicting their experiences.
